The 4-Steps Approach

The 4-Steps are four learnable skills for working with our beliefs.

They help us identify, understand, and change the beliefs shaping our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviors.

Each step builds a different skill. Together, they work as an integrated process, with each one strengthening the others.

As these skills develop, they give us an increasingly greater ability to understand our experiences and create lasting change.

Why do the 4-Steps focus on beliefs?

We cannot change what has already happened, nor directly choose our thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.

These are natural responses to how our brain interprets our experiences.

The greatest opportunity for lasting change lies in our beliefs.

By identifying, understanding, and changing our beliefs, we can gradually change the way we think, feel, and respond. The 4-Steps provide a practical process for making that change possible.

Why the Steps Work So Well Together

Each step develops a different skill, but it is the combination of these skills that gives the 4-Steps their power.

Mindfulness helps us become aware of our experiences. Compassion allows us to explore those experiences with greater openness and honesty. Together, they create the conditions for deeper insight. That deeper understanding then makes it possible to reframe our beliefs more accurately and effectively.

The four skills work together as an integrated process, with each step strengthening the next and giving us a greater ability to understand ourselves and create lasting change.

Putting the 4-Steps into Practice

Understanding the 4-Steps is only the beginning.

Reading about cooking will not make someone a chef. The only way to become a chef is to cook. The same is true here: lasting change comes from practising Mindfulness, Compassion, Insight, and Reframing, not from reading about them.

Understanding opens the door. Practice is how we walk through it.
